Inländer rum (also Inländerrum ) is a spirit with usually 38% to 40%, but also up to 80% alcohol content, which is particularly popular in Austria and other countries of the former Danube monarchy.

use

Inländer rum and its successor products are mainly used in the successor states of Austria-Hungary and in Germany. The taste of the spirit is described as "mild, chocolaty, sweet and pleasant".

In Viennese cuisine , the specific taste of Inländer rum is used in several local dishes. Local rum is a key ingredient in Jagertee .

history

Since rum was not always available in sufficient quantities in Austria-Hungary, due to the lack of colonies in which the sugar cane needed for rum production grew, people made do with domestic rum as a substitute product. Its origin goes back to a pharmacist from Krems an der Donau in the 19th century and is an example of the numerous alcoholic beverages such as bitters that are produced in pharmacies . It was a mixture of ethyl alcohol , water and various flavorings and colorings with a rum-like taste and appearance.

Only since January 1st 1999 has the alcohol base of Inländer rum come from sugar cane processing, which was not the case until then.

The name was initially intended to differentiate the product from the real, imported rum, but is now also subject to numerous EU directives and has led to sometimes strange, but EU-compliant new names such as Inländer Spirituose (Austria), tuzemák (Czech Republic, tuzemec = native) or Hajós (Hungary, hajós = boatman, seaman). Meanwhile, the EU regulation 110/2008, Annex III, regulates that domestic rum must be 100% produced in Austria. Inländer rum is therefore a protected Austrian specialty . Due to the efforts of France, a drink that is not made from sugar cane and does not come from the Caribbean can no longer be called rum and therefore also not called domestic rum. From straw national rum so was straw and from the Tuzemský rum or Tuzemák .

Among other things, there are currently eight common brands on the retail market: Spitz, Mautner, Gautier-Mückstein, Lehar, Stroh , Felser, Alte Excellenz and Riquet. According to a blind tasting of seven varieties with 38% (Spitz, Felser, Mautner, Riquet, Alte Excellenz, Gautier-Mückstein and Lehar), experts rated the following brands as mostly good in terms of taste: Spitz, Lehar, Mautner, Felser.

In 2017 Bauer's InländerRum was awarded a silver medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition .
