Inland ECDIS

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Inland ECDIS is an electronic navigation information system specially designed for inland navigation.

In shipping there is an obligation to provide up-to-date paper charts. This equipment requirement can also be achieved with an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS for short). This ECDIS is internationally standardized in the standard of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).

On this basis, the Inland ECDIS standard was created for the inland waterway area . The international standards already set for inland waterways have thus been supplemented. Thus, the Inland ECDIS is "Sea-ECDIS" compatible, which is of great importance for inland navigation in the sea and coastal areas.

Inland ECDIS is based on the Inland ECDIS standard, which is created and maintained by an international group of experts, the Inland ECDIS Expert Group (IEEG).

The international expert group - Inland ENC Harmonization Group (IEHG) - has published the Product Specification for Inland ENCs and the IENC Feature Catalog as well as the Inland ENC Encoding Guide in the current version on its website.

The graphic basis in Inland ECDIS are the electronic inland navigation charts ( Inland Electronic Navigational Charts ), which are created on the basis of the Inland ECDIS standard and the associated regulations.

Since 23 December 2016, inland vessels are required to be equipped with AIS and Inland ECDIS.
