Inscription by Surb Saak

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The inscription of Surb Saak is on two mismatched fragments of a stele from the Armenian church Surb Saak in Van .

Most scientists assume that fragment A is the upper part and fragment B is the lower part. The inscription represents an account of the deeds of the Urartian king Argišti I. The front of A begins with a report Argištis about the campaign against the king of Utruburši, against the land of Diaueḫe and the submission of the king of Panulua, who prostrated himself before Argisti. The following lines tell of another campaign against Diaueḫe.

On the back of fragment B is the report on Argisti's campaigns against Diaueḫe and his allies.

Lines 33–40: "Argišti says: The kings who came to the aid of the king of Diaueḫe: three years in a row I waged war with the land of Luša, the land of Katarza , the people of Eriaḫi , the people of Uiteruḫi." He reports on his campaign in the (land) Abunis and that he overthrew the king (of the land) Luša . " I subjugated the king of the land of Iga . I stayed at the place, he paid tribute to King Argišti." This ends the preserved part of the inscription.
