Island hopping

Island hopping , sometimes called island jumping , engl. : Island hopping , is the short-term, systematic visit to several nearby islands or atolls .

The term plays an essential role in modern tourism . Within a short period of time, vacationers visit several nearby islands for a few days (or even only a few hours), mostly by (sailing) boat, ferry or during a cruise .

Island hopping is of historical importance in the military field. During the Second World War , American forces conquered or besieged almost all strategically important islands in the South Pacific by means of so-called " island hopping " .
