Insert socket
In professional audio mixing consoles, there is also an insert socket for each mono channel strip . It's an interface . The input signal of the channel strip can be tapped at the insert socket (also: on the insert ), processed and fed back into the channel strip. It is mainly used in recording studio technology to loop in effects that the signal should pass through completely, such as dynamics processors or equalizers . In audio technology one speaks of "inserts". They can occasionally also be used to tap input signals from the channel strips without processing.
Insert sockets are usually three-pin 1/4 '' phone sockets . The signal is sent via one contact and the signal from the effects / dynamics processor is received via the second. The insert signal components output and input are called insert-send and insert-return . The shaft provides the ground connection. Since only three contacts are available, the insert signals are transmitted asymmetrically . Particularly high-quality mixing consoles also have separate sockets for send and return in a signal-balanced design.
