Inspiration Mars is an American nonprofit organization that from the first space tourist Dennis Tito was established and had set itself the goal, from January 2018 to May 2019 a manned flyby on Mars perform. Initially, the plan was postponed to 2021, but the project has now been stopped. The national space agencies NASA and Roskosmos had not published any specific plans either - however, all previous considerations and studies there also referred to a landing on the surface of Mars.

financing

For the first two years the foundation was financed by Tito himself, after which it was planned to have raised enough capital to carry out the project. In 2013, Tito assumed the mission would cost less than NASA's Mars Science Laboratory .

Trajectory

Possible flight profile of the mission

The synodic period of Mars is about two years, so possible starting windows are repeated in this period. Since the Mars orbit has a relatively high eccentricity, the necessary take-off speeds vary. For a start in January 2018, the required energy consumption would have been relatively low. The flight time to Mars should be 227 days, the approximation will take place on August 20, 2018. The closest approach to Mars is on its night side, the distance to the Martian surface can be reduced to up to 100 km. Active path changes are not planned. The flight by Mars changes the flight path so that it comes close to Venus' orbit on the return flight . The return to earth would have taken place on May 21, 2019 at a relative speed of about 14 km / s. A flight duration of 501 days was planned. The next opportunity to start with a similarly inexpensive train would not have appeared until 2031 Template: future / in 5 years.

crew

The crew should consist of a married couple who are supposed to represent humanity. Due to the psychological stress and the potential impact on fertility, the plans were for a middle-aged couple, but the selection never took place.

Technical implementation

The mission should be based on existing technology, which should be further developed in a subsequent process. In particular, components from private space travel such as the Dragon capsule should be used.
