The instability strip is a narrow strip in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram in which there are pulsating stars .

The stripe extends from the brightest Cepheids at the top to the main row at the bottom. Also included are RR Lyrae stars and Delta Scuti stars . The mechanism of pulsing is the same for all stars in the instability strip, but the different types traverse the strip in different places due to different composition and mass and different ages.
