Scientific Institute of the Alsace-Lorraine in the Empire
The Scientific Institute of the Alsace-Lorraine in the Reich was a research institute that existed from 1920 to 1945 at the new Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .
meaning
The purpose of this institute was “to look after the common scientific and cultural interests of those displaced or more or less voluntarily emigrated from Alsace-Lorraine after the First World War. In addition, the institute should keep alive and expand the understanding of the importance of Alsace-Lorraine for German culture throughout Germany. Political aspirations were excluded ”.
The institute was located in a building at Bockenheimer Landstrasse 127 in Frankfurt am Main .
The general secretaries of the institute were:
- 1920–1935: Professor Dr. phil. Georg Wolfram (1858–1940)
- 1935–1945: Professor Dr. phil. Paul Wentzcke (1879–1960)
The library of the former institute, comprising around 25,000 volumes, is now incorporated into the Johann Christian Senckenberg University Library in Frankfurt.
