Institute for Criminological Social Research

The Institute for Criminological Social Research (IKS) at the University of Hamburg was the only social science- oriented criminological institute in the Federal Republic of Germany . 2016, the institute was disbanded and the Department of Criminology Social Research at the Faculty of Social Sciences of WiSo faculty of the university.

In English-speaking countries, it is common for criminology to be done by social scientists; In Germany, all of the criminology chairs and institutes are located in the law faculties; the chairs are consistently occupied by criminal law professors. In addition to the social science department, the University of Hamburg also has an institute for criminal sciences at the law faculty. First Institute Director of the ICS was Fritz Sack , followed him as managing director of the now retired Sebastian Scheerer - both are habilitated sociologists.

As a successor to the IKS, the department offers two courses, the master’s course in international criminology and the advanced master’s course in criminology . Christine Hentschel is the program director and chairwoman of the examination board for both courses .
