The Institute for Molecular Biotechnology GmbH (IMBA) is a research institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and conducts basic research in the fields of molecular biology and biomedicine. The aim is to elucidate molecular structures and processes in cells and organisms in search of the fundamental causes of various diseases. Possible future areas of application for the knowledge gained at the IMBA range from immunology to cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases to cancer therapy. Another objective is the establishment and expansion of cooperation with qualified partners from the academic and industrial environment. In this way, the results of basic research can be used for application-oriented and clinical research.

research

At the IMBA, independent and multidisciplinary working groups work on biological issues in the areas of cell division, cell movement, RNA interference and epigenetics, as well as in applied fields such as cancer, stem cells, osteoporosis or infectious diseases. The geneticist Josef Penninger and his deputy director, the stem cell biologist Jürgen Knoblich, were responsible for the scientific management from 2002 to 2018 . Jürgen Knoblich has been the interim manager since summer 2018.

Scientific infrastructure

The IMBA forms the Vienna BioCenter with the Research Institute for Molecular Pathology (IMP), the Gregor Mendel Institute for Molecular Plant Biology (GMI), the Max Perutz Laboratories (MPL) as well as several companies and a university of applied sciences . Together with its partners, the IMP and the GMI, the IMBA organizes a number of highly specialized scientific service facilities such as mass spectrometry, bioinformatics and light microscopy. Further services such as the “fly library ” Vienna Drosophila RNAi Center (VDRC), electron microscopy, or a next-generation sequencing department are available to scientists via the Vienna Biocenter Core Facilities GmbH.

Initial and continuing education

  • For its scientists, the IMBA offers together with its partners a wide range of training opportunities, such as the VBC Summer School , the VBC PhD program (VBC PhD programs) or the VBC seminar program with internationally renowned speakers.
  • Interested adults, children and young people can get to know everyday life in a research laboratory in the Vienna Open Lab and carry out simple experiments themselves. The Vienna Open Lab is the first molecular biology interactive laboratory in Austria and a joint initiative of the Open Science Association and the IMBA.
