The Institute for Parliamentary Research (IParl) was founded in April 2016 by Suzanne S. Schüttemeyer in Halle / Saale , who until October 2018 held the Chair for Government Studies and Policy Research at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . The IParl is an institution of the Science and Democracy Foundation (SWuD). With its focus on parliamentarianism , it ties in with the focus of the political science work of the founder Eberhard Schütt-Wetschky . The IParl has been based in Berlin-Mitte since November 2018. Benjamin Höhne is the deputy director of the institute.

Goal setting

The IParl is dedicated to theoretical and empirical research into democratic representation and legitimation. In addition to parliamentarianism research, party research is a central task area. It sees itself as a mediation and exchange platform between research, practice and the public. The main concern is to "anchor the democratic order in society and develop it".

Candidate list project

The initial project of the IParl examines the list of candidates for the 2017 federal election . In addition, more than 150 assembly meetings of the parties CDU, CSU, SPD, DIE LINKE, BÜNDNIS 90 / DIE GRÜNEN, FDP and AfD were scientifically observed. Almost 20,000 party members were surveyed at these events in cooperation with the opinion research institute policy matters. The research resources used for this made it possible for the first time to carry out such a far-reaching examination of the candidate list in Germany.
