Instituto Antártico Uruguayo
The Instituto Antártico Uruguayo (IAU) is the Uruguayan body that controls, organizes, directs and promotes research in the Antarctic .
It was founded on January 9, 1968 by a group of private individuals. It was chaired by Professor Julio César Musso , whose book Antártida Uruguaya appeared in the same year. On August 28, 1975, Article 103 of Law No. 14.416 transferred the Institute to the Uruguayan Ministry of Defense.
The Instituto Antártico Uruguayo is the operator of the research station Base Científica Antártica Artigas and the Estación Científica Antártica Ruperto Elichiribehety in Antarctica, which was founded in 1997 .
