Base Científica Antártica Artigas

Base Científica Antártica Artigas (BCAA) is the official name of the only Antarctic year-round base in Uruguay .
Founded on December 22, 1984 Antarctic research station is located on Collins Bay in the southwest of the South Shetland Islands belonging to King George Island . The distance from the station to the South Pole is 3104 km and the Uruguayan capital Montevideo is 3012 km. The station, commonly known as Base Artigas , is operated by the Instituto Antártico Uruguayo and works all year round. In winter it is occupied by 8 people. During the summer it can accommodate up to 60 people. The first head of the base was Omar Porciúncula .
