The Estación Científica Antártica Ruperto Elichiribehety (ECARE) is the official name of a summer research station of the state of Uruguay on the Antarctic Peninsula .

It is located 500 meters from the Argentine Esperanza station , in Caleta Choza, southeast of the opening of Bahía Esperanza Bay in the northeast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was founded on December 22, 1997 by the Instituto Antártico Uruguayo . The first head of the station named after Ruperto Elichiribehety was José Unzurruzaga . The staff capacity is 7 people.

history

The station was built in 1945 by the British Antarctic Survey as Base D (Hope Bay) . The station was partially destroyed by fire in 1948 and closed in 1964. On December 8, 1997, the British Antarctic Survey handed the station over to Uruguay. It has had its current name since then.
