The Chi-Town Shooters were founded in 2008 and are one of the founding members of the AAHL. Initially, the franchise was run under the name South Shore Shooters and should play in the Mid-Atlantic Hockey League . However, this stopped their game operations before the start of the season and the shooters switched to the AAHL under a new name . Her hometown Dyer is in the greater Chicago area , which is where the name Chi-Town, a nickname for Chicago, comes from. With the Dayton Gems they had a partner team in the International Hockey League and at junior level one with the Rogue Valley Wranglers from the Northern Pacific Hockey League.

The Chi-Town Shooters were the first team to win the Rod Davidson Cup in the 2008/09 season . They defeated the Battle Creek Revolution in the final of the playoffs .

In the 2009/10 season they were able to win the regular season title again, but were subject to the West Michigan Blizzard in the playoff semifinals . In August 2010 the franchise left the AAHL and planned to continue playing in a junior league for the 2011/12 season.

Before the end of the year it was decided to abandon these plans and return to the AAHL. In the 2010/11 season they reached the playoffs together with the Battle Creek Revolution prematurely, as only the two teams remained in play.
