History and structure

The statistical department of the provincial administration ( Repartição Provincial de Estatística ) existed under Portuguese colonial administration . After Cape Verdean independence in 1975, the Serviço Nacional de Estatística (SNE), a statistical department within the Ministry of Economic Affairs, was set up. Edgard Chrysostome Pinto became the first director. In 1985 the statistical service, now under the name Sistema Estatístico Nacional (SEN), became a separate authority with unchanged management.

On December 23, 1996, the SEN was transferred to the newly created Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE), under the direction of the engineer Francisco Fernandes Tavares. From then on, Edgard Chrysostome Pinto was in charge of the superordinate national statistical council, to which the INE and the central bank ( Banco de Cabo Verde ) also belong.

Since 1996 various departments have been created by law within the INE, called “delegated bodies” ( Órgãos Delegados do INE ). These are the statistical departments of other ministries and government agencies that are located in Cape Verde within the INE. For example, in 2012 a statistical department was set up for the Ministry of Agriculture.
