The journal was founded in 1922 under the name of German Journal for All Forensic Medicine and - with an interruption between 1944 and 1948 - was published under this title until 1969. From 1970 to 1989 the journal appeared under the name Zeitschrift für Rechtsmedizin (Journal of legal medicine). Until 1968 it was the organ of the German Society for Forensic and Social Medicine , from 1969 of the German Society for Forensic Medicine (DGRM). The journal has been published in English since 1990 and has been an organ of the International Academy of Legal Medicine (IALM) since 1999 .
