Integrative Body Psychotherapy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Integrative Body Psychotherapy IBP (Integrative Body Psychotherapy) was begun in the late 1960s in California, founded by Jack Lee Rosenberg (1932-2015).

IBP was created in the late 1960s on the west coast of the USA at the Esalen Institute , where Jack Lee Rosenberg held his first courses and where Fritz Perls , Anna Halprin and Carl Rogers met. His interest in sexuality led him to study Wilhelm Reich's work as well as Eastern philosophies and their bodywork ( yoga , tantra ) and to publish his first book Total Orgasm in 1973 .

Influenced by the formative body psychotherapeutic experiences of Phil Cucuruto, a student of Wilhelm Reich , he began to expand the central concepts of Gestalt therapy to include the somatic level and developed the Gestalt Body Psychotherapy .

Sources from IBP

In addition to the sources mentioned, important trends in psychoanalysis (self psychology by Heinz Kohut , developmental psychology , object relationship theory ) found their way into IBP. Furthermore, the systemic approach, influenced by the family therapy of Virginia Satir, was reflected in the so-called scenario . Over the years, Rosenberg integrated elements from various psychotherapeutic and body therapy approaches and created a new, coherent therapy system from them. IBP was developed further by Rosenberg together with Marjorie L. Rand, Beverly Kitaen Morse, Andrea Juhan, Markus Fischer (Switzerland) and William Emerson .

Evaluation of effectiveness

A multi-center study of eight body psychotherapy institutions, including the Integrative Body Psychotherapy IBP, shows significant improvements for outpatient treatments in relevant areas (anxiety, depression, other psychopathological symptoms, interpersonal problems and physical complaints) after just six months of treatment, and a further significant increase after two years and stability of the symptom reduction and well-being one year after the end of therapy. These results are to be interpreted as proof of the effectiveness of the investigated methods under outpatient practice conditions.
