The integrated staff network of the party and state leadership of the GDR and the armed organs ( Integrated Staff Network of the NVA , Special Network 1 ) was an automatic and nationwide wired staff and administrative network for telephone and telex connections as well as image and data transmission. It was built on the basis of a resolution of the National Defense Council of the GDR on December 16, 1977 under the responsibility of the Ministry of National Defense and, after its commissioning, also replaced the old staff network of the NVA. It was a computer-aided network, in which all users, according to the official name of the network, participated, worked and paid proportionally. For the main message center of the MfNV , the switching and operations center 2 of the network was an important partner in ensuring the technical information of the MfNV.

Conception of the network

The conception for the network included:

  • - the formation of the structural facility "Central Office for Switching and Operation" (ZfSB) as a military command organization in the NVA,
  • - the establishment of computer-aided control and operations centers (SBZ) in the territorial military areas with responsibility for switching, dispatching, measuring and testing services,
  • - the networking of the main exchanges and the multiple connection of node exchanges,
  • - the installation of transfer points, connection points and quick switch panels,
  • - the operation of its own telephone and telex exchanges.

Network structure

The network structure provided for an upper (ONE), middle (MNE) and lower network level (UNE) to be expanded in stages. The objectives for the establishment of this network were not achieved until the political change. The network with the oNE (upper network level) went into operation in 1983 and remained the responsibility of the MfNV until the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was not based on special cables from the NVA, the MfS or the Deutsche Post, but on the lines of long-distance, district and local network levels that were mainly leased from the GDR's Deutsche Post. The network's switching and operations centers were prepared for the connection of all types of communications technology. In September 1990 the network offered the possibility of interconnection with selected basic network, switching and switching centers of the Bundeswehr basic network.
