Inter-American Democracy Charter

The Inter-American Democratic Charter ( Engl. Inter-American Democratic Charter ) at a special session of the General Assembly on 11 September 2001. Organization of American States in Lima adopted. Its main goal is to strengthen and maintain democratic organs in the American states. This is based on the formulation in Article 1:

"The peoples of the Americas have a right to democracy and their governments have an obligation to promote and defend it." (Translation: ... have a right to democracy and their government has the obligation to develop and defend it.)

References to the set of rules were made in internal conflicts in Venezuela (2002, 2014 and 2016) and Honduras (2009).
