Interim Prime Minister (Israel)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Interim Prime Minister ( Hebrew ראש הממשלה בפועל, Rosch haMemschala baFoal lit. "Prime Minister through the Works") is a post that is held on an interim basis because the Prime Minister has died or has been declared incapacitated or he is not allowed to exercise this office because of a crime.

Israeli law distinguishes between Acting Prime Minister (מלא מקום ראש הממשלה) and the acting Israeli interim prime minister. The office of Israeli Acting Prime Minister may only be temporarily exercised for 100 consecutive days, as long as the Prime Minister is incapacitated. The Israeli interim prime minister, on the other hand, comes into play if the incumbent prime minister is declared permanently incapacitated. On April 11, 2006, Ariel Sharon was formally declared incapable of government . The 2001 law stipulates that the prime minister must be permanently incapacitated (beyond 100 consecutive days) in this case .

While the acting prime minister only needs to be a member of the Knesset, the interim prime minister also needs to be a member of the prime minister's party.

After Ehud Olmert, who stood in for Prime Minister Sharon for 100 days as acting prime minister in 2006, did not automatically become interim prime minister. The government voted to appoint him.

Shimon Peres was Foreign Minister when Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated and was appointed Interim Prime Minister until a new government was formed. Yigal Allon also became interim prime minister after incumbent Prime Minister Levi Eshkol suddenly died of a heart attack in February 1969. Allon stayed in office until Golda Meir formed her government.

The powers of the interim prime minister as well as the acting prime minister are the same as those of the prime minister, except to be allowed to dissolve parliament.
