Intermediate type

The intermediate type (English: medium-sized type ) was a series tanker type from the group of Empire ships . The ships were built at two British shipyards during World War II .

details

The intermediate type was a medium-sized standard war tanker at the time of construction. Within the British tanker construction program, it was around 5,000 tonnes lower than the much larger ocean-type tankers , Norway-type and the standard-fast-tanker type , but it was significantly larger than the coastal tankers of the Empire-Pym type who have favourited Empire Cadet Class or the Chant Type . The arrangement of the ships with superstructures slightly forward of amidships and the engine room aft was similar to that of contemporary tankers.

In the years 1943 to 1946 10 units of the intermediate type were built at the two Sunderlander shipyards Sir James Laing and Sons (six units) and Joseph L. Thompson and Sons (four units). The ships were built with Doxford diesel engines as propulsion systems. In addition to the pure transport of oil, the ship type was also used during the war years to supply other ships with fuel at sea. For camouflage, numerous units of the type were provided with inoperative loading harnesses on deck, which should make them look like conventional dry freighters from a distance.
