Intermediate data format

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Intermediate Data Format (for Mechanical Data Exchange Specification for the Design and Analysis of Printed Wiring Assemblies) is a 3D - CAD - data exchange format . It is specially tailored to import and export circuit board data. In this way, the housing designer can transmit the space available to the circuit board designer. The circuit board designer can transmit the IDF data to the housing designer, who can then use it to check whether the circuit board and its components collide with the housing.

The intermediate data format consists of two files: * .emn and * .emp. The optional panel file has been available since version 3.0.

Content of the * .emn file

  • Circuit board dimensions (PCB outline)
  • Position and orientation of the components
  • Position of mounting holes and cutouts
  • Position of plated-through holes (vias)
  • Blocked areas for components and vias
  • notes

Content of the * .emp file

  • Dimensions of the components
  • Height of the components
