Scheme of human foot bones. The intermetatarsal joints lie between the lower ends of the metatarsal bones shown in yellow.

The joints between the bases of the metatarsals are called intermetatarsal joints ( Articulationes intermetatarsales ) . There are four intermetatarsal joints in humans. These are tight joints ( amphiarthroses ) that are not very mobile and , according to the shape of the joint surfaces, flat joints ( articulationes planae ). The intermetatarsal joints take part in the tilting movements of the foot ( pronation and supination ) to a small extent .

The second and third intermetatarsal joints communicate with the middle tarsometatarsal joint , the fourth intermetatarsal joint with the outer tarsometatarsal joint.
