from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Association of Genocide Scholars (short: IAGS , de: International Association of Genocide Researchers ) is a global, interdisciplinary organization that conducts research and teaching on nature, the causes and consequences of genocide and studies on the prevention of genocide. The IAGS is an autonomous sister organization of the non-profit organization Institute for the Study of Genocide (ISG), founded in 1982 .

The organization was founded in 1994. Its members meet every two years. The meetings will be about comparative research, key new work, case studies, links between genocide and cruel human rights abuses, prevention and punishment of genocide.

The aim of the organization is to deal with genocide issues more intensively than the regular "two-hour conferences" allow and to bring together professionals from various disciplines to form an interdisciplinary collaboration.

Furthermore, the board members as well as the members of the ISG and the IAGS advise the media, governments and intergovernmental organizations for the purpose of early warning and prevention.

The last (seventh) biennial meeting of the IAGS took place from July 9th to 13th, 2007 in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo .

The IAGS and the ISG have published several books. These include Darfur: Genocide Before Our Eyes (ISG 2005), Teaching About Genocide - A Guidebook for College Teachers: Critical Essays, Syllabi, Bibliography (ISG 2002), Ever Again? Evaluating the United Nations Genocide Convention on Its 50th Anniversary and Proposals to Activate the Convention (ISG 1999), Genocide: Essays Toward Understanding, Early Warning, and Prevention (IAGS 1999), The Prevention of Genocide: Rwanda and Yugoslavia Reconsidered (ISG 1994) , Genocide Watch (1992), Lives at Risk: A Study of Violations of Life Integrity in 50 States in 1987 Based on the Amnesty International 1988 Report (ISG 1990).

Membership is possible for scientists, for academics and for anyone interested worldwide. The president is Gregory Stanton .
