Altercatio

The altercatio ( Latin altercatio "exchange of words") is a rhetorical form of the ancient court speech ( genus iudiciale ) from argumentative speech and counter-speech within the same speaker's perspective. It was partly used eristically , so u. a. in Plato's Apology of Socrates (Chapter 24, presentation of the charges and their refutation).

In medieval poetry, the term referred to the controversial poem in general. He also appeared in titles such as B. Altercatio Phyllidis et Florae (13th century).
