The International Law Association (IALS) is a non-governmental , non-profit organization . It was founded in July 1950 to research the development of law taking into account diverging legal systems around the world. Founded as the International Committee of Comparative Law (ICCL) in July 1950, it has operated under its current name since March 1955. Resolutions that were passed before they were renamed and have not been revoked or reformulated since then are still valid under the new name. The IALS is under the auspices of UNESCO and is a founding member of the International Science Council (ISC) . It represents 29 national legal institutes and is the umbrella organization of eight subordinate international research associations

The International Committee meets at least once a year at the invitation of its President. Unless the committee decides to adjourn the meeting for two years for exceptional reasons.
