The International Association of Wood Anatomists was founded in 1931.

The goals of the association are:

  • the publication of scientific articles on wood anatomy and related fields
  • facilitating the collection, storage and exchange of research materials
  • laying the foundations for the consistent use of terminology in describing wood and bark
  • promoting the exchange of information among members through meetings and correspondence
  • creating an awareness of the place of wood anatomy in science and technology and in the protection of natural resources

The organization is headed by a 12-person body, each elected for three years, headed by an executive secretary. This position is currently held by the Dutchman Frederic Lens.

The association publishes specialist books and reference works on the subject of wood anatomy and publishes the latest research results.
