Reprisal Scars is a Finnish melodic death and thrash metal band from Jyväskylä , which was founded in 2003, disbanded in 2011 and has been active again since 2014.
history
Reprisal Scars was originally founded as a cover band in the rock club Tanssisali Lutakko in autumn 2003 by guitarist Joonas Paananen and bassist Ville Halonen. The line-up was supplemented by the singer Jyrki Markkanen and the bassist M. Paananen. All band members were also employees of the club. A first demo appeared about eight months later in January 2004 . In the summer Tuomas Kumpulainen joined as the new bass player. Santtu Rautio was briefly part of the line-up as the second guitarist, before he was replaced by J. Humalajärvi. In 2005 a second demo followed under the name Evidence . Over 1,000 units stood out from the demo. The publication was named “Demo of the Week” on the national radio station YleX . This allowed the band to attract more attention. On April 8th, the band held their first gig in Yökemia for 40 to 50 people. The following summer, the band's activity ceased as the members had to devote themselves to other things. In the autumn, Humalajärvi, who was moving to another city, announced his departure. Thereupon Rautio returned and took up this post. After rehearsals in the summer of 2006, there were a few gigs in August. After participating in the Lutakko Liekeissä Festival , the band went to Studio Watercastle to record the third demo Done Is Done . This time around 1,400 pieces were sold. The demo allowed the band to further increase their popularity, for example songs were now used on the radio across Europe . After the release, a European tour with Heavy Metal Perse was carried out. The tour consisted of seven performances in six cities and took place in August and September 2006. In total, over 30 concerts were given to promote the demo. Rautio was unable to participate in a performance at the Äknepop Festival , which is why the band had to play with a replacement guitarist. In 2007 the band held further performances, at the same time they wrote new songs. In February the singer Jyrki Markkanen left the group, after which he was replaced by Teemu Kupari. In January 2008 the EP Dead End Road was released . The sound carrier was once again voted “Demo of the Week” by YleX. Shortly after the recordings, the guitarist Rautio left the line-up to devote himself to his other band, Obscurant . His last appearance was the concert on the occasion of the release of Dead End Road at Club Lutakko. After the next performance, the singer Teemu Kupari resigned due to his time commitment to work and study, after which the group paused until summer 2008. Then the band's debut album was recorded under the direction of Hannu Honkonen in the Noiseworks studio . The work lasted around eight weeks from July 13th to August 10th. The two guitarists of the band Venthole joined as further members: Sakari "Sakke" Paavola took over the vocals, while Tuomas "Reuhka" Kauppinen also played the electric guitar here. Before the recordings, the band had rehearsed with these two members for seven weeks, with five new songs being created. Thus the band had a total of 13 songs available for recording. The album was released in November 2008 on Violent Journey Records under the name Killing Art Of Self-Deception . It finished seventh in the "Best Finnish Newcomer" category at the Finnish Metal Awards . During this time the band was active live and appeared at a few festivals. After the 2010 EP Is This the Next Last Day , the band split up on January 11, 2011, as Kauppinen had to leave the country for work reasons and the other band members did not want to replace him.
Paavola, Halonen, Paananen and Kauppinen came together again for a single appearance at the Selviytyjät Private Metal Festival - for the first time since 2008 - because it was the 50th in the band's history. Thanks to the popularity of the festival visitors, Reprisal Scars reappeared as a permanent band a few months later.
style
Thomas from Metal.de wrote in his review of Evidence that you can hear Melodic Death Metal on it, whereby the Death Metal portion is mainly limited to the growls . Otherwise, the music can be assigned to classic heavy metal , although there are similarities with Iron Maiden . The songs are mostly medium-paced and the riffs and song structures are kept simple. Occasionally, tonal parallels to Crematory can also be seen . In another review of Done Is Done it was found that it was playing melodic death metal in the Swedish style. In the songs, the group process “beautiful twinaxe melodies with robust Boller riffs”, fluctuate between classic and modern metal and are not averse to “primitive death metal”. Growling and screaming are used as vocals . On the demo, the group played "very pleasant, technically impeccable and fat-sounding ditty". Playing the drums sounds artificial and is more reminiscent of a drum computer . Overall, the group does not manage to sound independent. Luxi Lahtinen from metal-rules.com assigned the band to modern death and thrash metal in his Killing Art of Self Deception review. Pick up where you left off on Dead End Road . However, through the use of another singer and another guitarist, the music sounds a little different. The growls are less powerful and monotonous in the long run. The album mixes “deadly” and “heavy” riffs with catchy melodies.
