from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) researches the possibilities of improving agricultural production methods in the arid regions of the world. ICARDA, founded in 1977, is one of the 15 research institutions of the Advisory Group for International Agricultural Research . ICARDA's headquarters are in Aleppo . The facilities also have branches in various countries in North Africa and the Middle East.

The administration in Aleppo was evacuated in mid-2012 due to the civil war in Syria and the headquarters relocated to Beirut. The most important stocks - u. a. the gene bank - could be saved. In 2015, Icarda requested seeds from the “Noah's Ark of Plants”, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault on Svalbard, because of the destruction of its local seed collection in Aleppo .
