International Chess Committee of the Deaf

The ICCD , the International Chess Committee of the Deaf, is the world chess association for the deaf .

The ICCD was founded as ICSC ( International Committee of Silent Chess ) on August 14, 1949 in Copenhagen . The official German name was World Committee for Deaf Chess . The ICSC has been affiliated with FIDE since April 25, 1955 . On October 1, 2012, on the occasion of the 31st ICSC Congress, it was decided to change the name to ICCD ( International Chess Committee of the Deaf ), as the word "Silent Chess" (meaning " deaf and dumb chess") is out of fashion today and has Deaf "(" Deaf ") was replaced.

The ICCD consists of 35 national associations, including Germany through the German Deaf Sports Association and Switzerland through the Swiss Chess Association for the Hearing Impaired . The ICSC is entitled to start at the Chess Olympiads analogous to the IBCA (blind people) and the IPCA (physically handicapped people) . The ICSC first took part in the Olympics in 2002 by sending a world selection of deaf players. The guiding motto of the association affixed to the association's logo is Ad augusta per angusta .

The following championships are held under the care of the ICCD:

  • Individual world chess championships for the deaf in the categories men, women, juniors, juniors, deafblind
  • Chess Olympiad for the Deaf (team championship) for affiliated state associations in the categories men and women
  • Continental championships for club teams such as the European chess championships for club teams

The winners of the individual chess world championships in the respective categories receive the title of FIDE International Master , the U-20 participants (ICSC designation: Juniors) receive the title of FIDE Master .

Eligible are players who have an average hearing loss of over 55 dB at 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz. The highest Elo ICCD entrant is the Italian International Master Duilio Collutiis with an Elo rating of 2463 (as of August 2014). ICCD players who are also FIDE grandmasters are Yehuda Grünfeld and Zlatko Klarić .
