International Commission on Distance Education

The International Commission on Distance Education (CODE for short) is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization whose aim, in addition to promoting distance learning programs in socially disadvantaged countries, is primarily the quality assessment and accreditation of distance learning programs. The framework plans of the organization are designed to bring about a constant quality improvement of the respective courses.

The commission was set up in Switzerland in 1997 . It was donated by Ilya Prigogine , Nobel Prize winner in chemistry . The organization has had advisory status in the United Nations Economic and Social Committee ( ECOSOC ) since 2003 . President is Alfonso Roldan from Spain , Chairman Dumitru Mazilu from Romania . The board consists of 13 members who hold different functions within CODE.

The organization is represented in five regional centers on five different continents. Delegates are represented in all departments of the UN and report to the Economic and Social Committee on the concerns of the distance education sector.
