John Hollis
John Hollis (* 12. November 1927 as Bertie Wyn Hollis in Fulham, London ; † 18th October 2005 in Richmond upon Thames, London) was a British actor.
life and career
John Hollis was born Bertie Wyn Hollis on November 12, 1927 in Fulham in the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. As a television actor, he has been seen regularly in various series on British TV since the late 1950s, including two episodes of the 1962-69 crime series Simon Templar ( The Saint ) with Roger Moore in the title role.
In 1967 he played a minor, uncredited supporting role in the star-studded, “unofficial” James Bond satirical film Casino Royale by producer Charles K. Feldman . In the late 1970s he found his way into the science fiction genre and played alongside Marlon Brando a member of the Kryptonian Council of Elders in Superman from 1978. In Superman II - Alone Against All from 1980, he played again as a council member and graduated in the same year in Flash Gordon an appearance at the side of Max von Sydow .
Also in 1980 he played as Lando Calrissian's silent adjutant Lobot in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, his most famous role to date. He expressed himself humorously about this:
“If you play a role where you walk around with red flashing lights on your head, you can't go wrong, can you?
( English If you've got a part where you're walking around with lights flashing on your head, you can't really fail, can you? ) "
In 1981 he returned to the 007 film cosmos and completed the last "official" screen appearance of Bond's archenemy Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the opening sequence of In födlicher Mission ( For Your Eyes Only ) by John Glen , until the reboot in 2015 . Although the bald, Mao-suit-wearing, Persian-cat-stroking "villain in a wheelchair" was supposed to portray Ernst Stavro Blofeld clearly and unmistakably, his name was not mentioned because of the raging fireball copyright dispute between Kevin McClory and Eon Productions . As a result, ten years after his last appearance , the character was completely anonymously and unceremoniously "disposed of". In addition to Anthony Dawson , Donald Pleasence , Telly Savalas , Charles Gray and Christoph Waltz , and Max von Sydow in the "unofficial" Bond film Never Say Never , John Hollis was one of a total of seven actors who had played the role of the 007 arch villain.
Hollis was married twice and had a daughter who also became an actress. He died on October 18, 2005 at the age of seventy-seven in his hometown of London.
