International Continental Scientific Drilling Program

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program ( ICDP ) is an international organization for the promotion and support of the geosciences in the field of scientific continental drilling . It was launched in 1996 following the continental deep drilling program of the Federal Republic of Germany .

Research wells are an important tool for exploring the structure of the earth and its geological processes. The results of such boreholes explain geological processes and form important facts against which geological models can be measured. The international exchange of results as well as the transnational cooperation in this area should form an important building block for the responsible management of the earth's environment and resources.

Organs of the ICDP are an Assembly of Governors , which exercises financial and scientific supervision and makes fundamental decisions on alignment, an Executive Committee , which is responsible for program and financial planning and reports to the Board of Governors, and an academic committee Advisory group (Science Advisory group) , which carries out the scientific evaluation of proposed projects, for which it may use also external experts, and creates from it a list of priorities on scientific principles. An operational support group , which is provided by the German Research Center for Geosciences , is assigned to the executive committee for the management of current business .

Ordinary members of the ICDP are in the order of entry (as of 2020): China , Germany , USA , Japan , Austria , Norway , Czech Republic , Iceland , Finland , South Africa , Italy , Spain , Sweden , Switzerland , New Zealand , France , the Netherlands , Israel , United Kingdom and India . The UNESCO acts as an associate member.

The ICDP is currently funding work in eight areas, these are:

  • Active Faults and Earthquakes
  • Global Cycles and Environmental Change
  • Heat and mass transfer
  • The Hidden Biosphere
  • Cataclysmic Events - Impact Structures and Processes
