International Livestock Research Institute

Scientists work in a laboratory at the International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi, Kenya. Australia, among many other donors, is funding ILRI through the Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) to improve African food security.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is an independent research institute headquartered in Nairobi , Kenya . His research focuses on diseases of farm animals in developing countries, the development of diagnostic options and vaccines against them, as well as increasing productivity and maintaining the genetic diversity of farm animal breeds. The ILRI is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and is financed by it as well as by other public and private donors.

The institute was created in 1994 through the merger of two predecessor institutes, the International Lifestock Center for Africa (ILCA) in Addis Ababa , Ethiopia and the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases (ILRAD) in Nairobi. In addition to the headquarters in Nairobi, the ILRI also has an important location in Addis Ababa, as well as offices in East and West Africa, South and Southeast Asia, China and Central America. ILRI employs over 700 people from around 40 countries.
