International Mobile Satellite Organization

The International Organization for mobile satellite communications (Engl. International Mobile Satellite Organization , in short IMSO) is an international organization that oversees the part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System GMDSS exercises provided satellite communications services. It is based in London .

The foundation in 1999 was triggered by the privatization of Inmarsat , which was previously an international organization in the sense of international law. The depositary of the IMSO convention is the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The organs are the General Assembly and the Directorate; The general manager is Captain Esteban Pacha-Vicente.

Goals and functions

The goals and functions are;

  • Ensuring the provision of mobile satellite communication services in the GMDSS by service providers in accordance with the rules of the IMO
  • Equal treatment of service providers
  • Coordination of the LRIT
