International Working Group on Data Protection in Telecommunications

The International Working Group on Data Protection in Telecommunications (IWGDPT) is a working group of the International Data Protection Conference that deals with questions of data protection in telecommunications .

The group was founded in 1983 on the initiative of the Berlin State Data Protection Officer , under whose chair it is still working. It is therefore also called the Berlin Group . In addition to data protection authorities, members are government agencies, representatives of international organizations and scientists from all over the world.

The organization has made several recommendations to improve data protection in the telecommunications sector. Since the beginning of the 1990s, the working group has been particularly dedicated to protecting the personal rights of Internet users.

The IWGDPT is currently headed by Maja Smoltczyk, the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information.
