The competition originated in France , traditionally mainly puzzle fans from the Francophone world take part. In German-speaking Switzerland , the eliminations have been held since the 22nd edition (2007/08).

Six of these are pupil and student categories; Adults can participate in the Grand Public (lower level) or Haute Compétition (highest level) categories . The implementation takes place in four phases. The elimination phase or the quarter-finals will be held in two modalities . Students take part as part of their school. For students, adults and pupils from schools that do not participate, a different series of tasks will be published, which can be solved and sent in individually. This is followed by the regional finals in May. The Swiss final will be held in Lausanne . The best participants from all countries can puzzle for victory in the respective category in the international final in summer.

The local organizer of the competition in Switzerland for the regional phases is the Swiss Mathematical Games Association (SMASV) (French: Fédération Suisse des Jeux Mathématiques [FSJM] ). The international final in Paris is organized by the Comité International des Jeux Mathématique (CIJM) .
