International Alpine Rhine Government Commission

The International Government Commission on the Alpine Rhine (IRKA) is an institutional framework for cross-border cooperation in the Alpine Rhine area (in close cooperation with the International Rhine Regulation - IRR). This organization is the "political platform" on which the governments of Graubünden , St. Gallen , Liechtenstein and Vorarlberg as well as the responsible federal agencies in Bern and Vienna work together on the subject of the Alpine Rhine through transnational information exchange, discussion, decision-making and planning of water management measures on the Alpine Rhine.

history

Since 1995 the governments of the Principality of Liechtenstein, the State of Vorarlberg and the cantons of Graubünden and St. Gallen have been working more closely with an Alpine Rhine coordination group under the direction of an international government commission. In December 1998, the governments of the four federal states and cantons concluded a "Alpine Rhine Cooperation Agreement" to promote safe and sustainable development for the common benefit of the Alpine Rhine area, in particular ensuring flood security, the economical and environmentally friendly use of space and resources as well as the overarching goal the preservation and enhancement of natural values ​​on the Alpine Rhine.

The best known project is the Development Concept Alpenrhein (EKA) from 2005, which was presented by the International Government Commission Alpenrhein (IRKA) together with the IRR (see: Rhine widening ).

Goal and tasks

The main objectives of the IRKA is in terms of

Establish agreement on the Alpine Rhine and coordinate the measures early on and with foresight. For this purpose, the members of the IRKA usually meet twice a year for a joint committee meeting.

“Future Alpine Rhine” is the platform of the International Government Commission for the Alpine Rhine (IRKA) and the International Rhine Regulation (IRR).

The International Government Commission for the Alpine Rhine and International Rhine Regulation have been the publisher of the Alpenrheinzeitung magazine since 2011 . The magazine appears every six months in 3,000 print copies and online.

Both institutions also operate the website: alpenrheinschule.net with teaching materials for schools and offer free publications on water-related topics in connection with the Alpine Rhine.
