International Working Group on Ceramic Research

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Working Group for Ceramics Research (older name of the founder Paul Stieber International Hafnerei-Symposium (IHS), since 1983 at the suggestion of Werner Endres supplemented by the term Working Group for Ceramics Research (AfK)) is an interdisciplinary association that caters to those interested in historical and modern pottery and ceramics . Since 1968, the working group has been organizing an annual symposium with an extensive program of conferences and excursions in cooperation with changing institutions. Since 2007 this symposium has been called the International Ceramic Research Symposium (ISK) by the decision of the participants . In 2017 the 50th ISK took place in Innsbruck.

aims

The working group is an open forum for the exchange of new research results, the transfer of knowledge and general networking (information and contact exchange). Scientists and experts from the fields of art history , classical archeology , medieval-modern archeology ( historical archeology ), European ethnology or folklore and history meet . Natural scientists, artists, craftsmen from the ceramics industry as well as museologists , committed collectors and interested laypeople also take part. They all share a basic interest in pottery and ceramics in the broadest sense. The scientific lectures presented at the symposia and often lively discussed are reflected in extensive conference volumes.

The internationality of the working group, at whose symposia usually around one hundred participants from seven to eight nations are represented, significantly promotes the dissemination of current research results and scientific work on ceramics in Europe. The conferences take place at the invitation of an institution that feels connected to ceramic research. Very often these are museums, but also university institutes or foundations that focus on more general scientific education. With hosts changing every year, the working group meets at various locations in Germany and abroad, mainly in Germany, but also in other Central European countries. This geographical diversity is taken into account by the overarching theme of the symposium with different thematic and regional references, but without losing sight of the diversity of current European research. In principle, the working group is not restricted either in terms of time or content of its lecture topics.

organization

The International Ceramic Research Working Group is not organized as an association, but rather forms a loose interest group. Five active members from the ranks of the participants now form an organizational "Board of Directors" with equal representation, which prepares the next "International Ceramic Research Symposia" and actively organizes the publications of previous conferences. He is supported by a changing number of conference participants on a voluntary basis.

The International Pottery Symposium was chaired and organized by:

  • 1968 - 1975 Paul Stieber (Munich)
  • 1976 - 1982 Ingolf Bauer (Munich)
  • 1983 - 2004 Werner Endres (Regensburg)
  • 2005 - 2015 Board of Directors: Ralph Mennicken (Raeren), Hans-Werner Peine (Münster), Sally Schöne (Düsseldorf), Patricia Stahl (Frankfurt), Hans-Georg Stephan (Göttingen / Halle)

Current:

  • Since 2016, the board has consisted of: Lutz Grunwald (Mayen), Marion Roehmer (Hage), Hans-Georg Stephan (Göttingen) and Patricia Stahl (Frankfurt).
  • The office of the working group is located in the Oven and Ceramics Museum Velten / Museum Hedwig Bollhagen in Velten.

History and personalities

In the first forty years of its existence (1st meeting in St. Justina, East Tyrol 1968), the International Working Group on Ceramic Research was shaped by three personalities and researchers who were enthusiastic about ceramics: Paul Stieber (1915–1975), Ingolf Bauer (1942–2006) and Werner Endres (1937-2015). In 1987 Werner Endres published a review of the first 20 years of the Pottery Symposium.

In 2003 Werner Endres and Konrad Spindler compiled all conference locations and published reports and publications (with a map) for the first time.

Werner Endres provided a synopsis of the history of the working group's first 40 years on the occasion of the 40th Pottery Symposium in Obernzell.
