The Yangon International Airport ( IATA : RGN, ICAO : VYYY) is located in Mingaladon, 15 kilometers north of downtown Yangon and is the main international airport of Myanmar . It was built in 1947 by the city's airport authorities on a former WWII airfield . The ruling military government neglected the airport more and more, so that it no longer met international requirements.
A renovation program that began in April 2003 resulted in the construction of a new terminal and the runway being extended to 3,414 meters. The new terminal opened in May 2007. The airport can now handle up to five aircraft per hour and 2.7 million passengers per year. A new runway for heavier aircraft is still under construction.
The old terminal is intended exclusively for domestic flights, the new one for international flights.
The new terminal
The new terminal was part of a comprehensive renovation program that began in April 2003 and was completed in May 2007. The new terminal can handle 900 arriving and departing passengers at the same time. The runway, which has been extended from 2,467 m to 3,414 m, now also allows a Boeing 747-400 to land . The renovation and construction cost was approximately $ 30 million to meet IATA service standards and ICAO safety standards. Other notable features of the terminal include:
- A separate floor for arriving and departing passengers to reduce traffic congestion
- Automated baggage handling system with integrated check-in system
- Four airlifts to unload a Boeing 747
- Specialized lounges for use by government officials and business people
- Two-storey car park with space for 340 vehicles
The new airport
The new Hanthawaddy Airport for 12 million passengers a year should be built around 80 km from Yangon by 2018 . However, due to financial bottlenecks and disagreement about the final capacity, the contract with a consortium around the operating company of Incheon Airport was terminated and a new $ 1.45 billion tender was placed in February 2014 by a Japanese-Singaporean consortium could decide for himself. The completion of the new airport is currently targeted for 2022.
