The International Congress of Mining and Mining History was founded in Schwaz in 2001 by Rudolf Palme , Wolfgang Ingenhaeff-Berenkamp and Alexander Sarlay as an international research event. In 2002 the first public event took place in Schwaz.

In 2001 Alexander Sarlay, managing director of the Schwazer Silberbergwerk Visitor Guide GmbH, convinced the Innsbruck university professor, Rudolf Palme , of the idea of ​​scientifically presenting the significance of Tyrolean mining in its historical scope. Wolfgang Ingenhaeff-Berenkamp joined this collaboration and the mining history congress was designed with international participation. Rudolf Palme died during the preparations for the first conference in 2002. Wolfgang Ingenhaeff has continued the idea since then. Under his leadership, the congress developed into an important annual meeting point for researchers in the history of mining.
