The International Cloud Atlas is an atlas published by the World Meteorological Organization for the international standardization of the symbolism and methodology in the observation of clouds . In the main features of its system, based on the work of the British naturalist Luke Howard (1772–1864), the atlas contains numerous typical cloud images, on the basis of which clouds can be clearly assigned to one of 27 different cloud types , with each of these cloud types also being assigned a characteristic symbol . In March 2017, the next new edition came out after 1987, in which new, additional cloud types were introduced.
