The London International Anarchist Congress was a gathering of anarchist groups and individuals between July 25th and August 1st, 1958.

origin

In the tradition of the anarchist congresses of 1907 in Amsterdam , 1922 in Berlin and 1949 in Paris , the London congress was an international meeting with the intention of organizing the anarchist movement. The congress was held at the Malatesta Club in London .

Attendees

Attending the congress from Germany were members of the Information group from Hamburg, the Liberation group from Mülheim an der Ruhr and the Wuppertal-Barmen group. From England there were members of the Club Malatesta , the International Anarchist Center, the anarchist group London and Freedom Press . From Belgium a member of the Pensée et Action group from Brussels. Two members of the Anarchist Federation from the Netherlands were present. Representatives of the Anarchist Federation and the Anarchist Groups for Revolutionary Action (GAAR) as well as members of the Spanish and Bulgarian movements in exile had traveled from France. Two members of the Anarchist Federation had also come from Italy. Groups from Chile and Sweden were also represented. Furthermore, further groups from Argentina, Germany, Ireland and the USA were represented via delegated mandates and further groups (e.g. from Mexico, Cuba or Japan) were represented by letters. Two anarchists from Switzerland could not attend the congress due to administrative problems.

Organizational development

After the CRIA (Commission de Relations International Anarchistes) was founded in Paris in 1948 to maintain and expand international relations, this intention was further expressed at the London Congress through the establishment of the International Anarchist Commission - CIA (Commission International Anarchiste). This consisted of a secretariat, which was based in London, and associated members from various organizations and countries. The secretariat took over the tasks of the CRIA and was looked after by Giovanni Baldelli (under the pseudonym John Gill).
