prehistory

The Dominican Republic was ruled for decades by the dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina. In general, he ruled the country as the private and lucrative domain of his family and favorites. There was resistance to the oppression.

Course of the invasion

After being expelled from the country shortly before, Juan Rodríguez García organized with the support of the Cuban government and other helpers - such as Juan Bosch , Juan Isidro Jiménez Grullón, General Miguel Angel Ramírez Alcántara, Diego Bordas, Horacio Julio Ornes - in 1949 on the island of Cayo Confite an invasion near the north coast of Cuba. The forces were 1,300 strong, including many Cubans.

The vanguard of the anti-Trujillistas in exile landed on July 19, 1949 in the Bay of Luperón on the north coast of the island using a PBY Catalina flying boat from Guatemala. The group was led by Horacio Ornes Coiscou. Two more flying boats should land in La Vega and San Juan de la Maguana. The one under the command of Juan Rodríguez, however, got caught in a storm and had to make an emergency landing in Costa Rica , the other under the direction of Miguel Angel Ramírez was detained by the authorities during a stopover for refueling in Cozumel ( Mexico ).

A contact with local resistance members in Puerto Plata failed due to countermeasures by the dictator. The withdrawal by flying boat did not succeed. Many of the attackers died in the fighting or were later executed.

The remaining parts of the group then formed the Caribbean Legion and the Ejercito de Liberation da America (ELA), which later tried to land again in Cayo Conflitea .
