Inverkeithing Friary

The Inverkeithing Friary , now the Inverkeithing Museum , is the hospice of the former Franciscan Proirei Inverkeithing. It is located in the Scottish village of Inverkeithing in the Council Area Fife . In 1972 the building was included as a single monument in the Scottish list of monuments, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 1997.

history

There is a document about the donation of the Barnbougle estate to the Franciscan order in October 1268, but its authenticity is controversial. The Inverkeithing Friary emerged around the middle of the 14th century. The priory had connections with the Scottish royal family. Jacob I stayed there several times when he visited Inverkeithing. John Swynton acquired the building after the secularization in 1559. In the late 17th century the building was redesigned. At that time it was named Rotmell's Inn after its owner Robert Menzies of Rotmell and housed an inn . During the 1930s the Inverkeithing Friary was restored. The meanwhile revised medieval condition was largely restored. A museum was later set up there, which illuminates the history of the priory.

description

The Inverkeithing Friary is on High Street in the southern part of Inverkeithing. The two-story building has a roughly L-shaped floor plan, although it was originally larger. Its masonry consists of quarry stone , which was built into a coarse layered masonry . Along the main facade, which is exposed to the northwest, there is a staircase leading to the upper floor, which dates from the 17th century. Both portal openings are ogival . The small twin lancet window on the upper floor was reopened as part of the restoration in the 1930s. Likewise the narrow slot windows in the basement. The other facades are constructed asymmetrically. Just like the front staircase on the main facade, the spiral staircase in the inner corner also dates from the 17th century. Some of the roofs are covered with gray slate.
