Carole Jordan

Dame Carole Jordan DBE , (born July 19, 1941 ) is a British astronomer and astrophysicist .

Life

After her doctorate in the field of solar research , specifically on the identification of spectral lines of iron and other elements in the solar spectrum as well as related physical phenomena in the solar corona , Carole Jordan was Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Astronomy at University College London from 1966 to 1969 . She then held various positions in the Astrophysics Research Unit, which was affiliated with the UKAEA in Culham , until 1976. In 1976 she was Wolfson Tutorial Fellow at Somerville College of Oxford University . In 1996 she became a full professor at Oxford, and from 2003 until her retirement in 2008 she was director of the Rudolf Peierls Center for Theoretical Physics.

Jordan made pioneering contributions to solar and stellar research, especially to the analysis of spectra in the X-ray and ultraviolet range as a plasma diagnostic method. She pioneered the calculations that were required to determine the relative particle densities of elements in different ionization states. While she concentrated on studying the solar corona and chromosphere at the beginning of her academic career in the mid-1960s , she later turned to the analysis of stellar spectra , using the results transmitted by space telescopes ( International Ultraviolet Explorer and Hubble Telescope ).

Awards and honors

In 1990 she became a Fellow of the Royal Society . In 1993 she was elected a full member of the Academia Europaea . From 1994 to 1996 she was the first female president of the Royal Astronomical Society , whose gold medal she was awarded in 2005. In 2006 she became Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). She is an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Physics .
