Ionel Pantea

Ionel Pantea is a Romanian bass-baritone and opera director. In 1966 he won the International Schumann Competition in Zwickau in singing.

life and work

Pantea studied at the music academies in Cluj (Klausenburg) and Vienna as well as at the early music seminar in Bruges . His teachers were Stella Simonetti , Albert D'André , Emmie Sittner , Alexander Kolo and Eric Werba . In 1966 he won first prize at the Robert Schumann International Singing Competition in Zwickau and other prizes at the Viñas and Maria Canals music competitions in Barcelona, George Enescu in Bucharest, the Geneva International Singing Competition and the ARD Competition in Munich (2nd prize, 1970) .

From 1964 he worked as a professor in the opera class in Cluj. In 1981 he was appointed opera director there. In 1985 the Romanian authorities forced him to leave the country. When he left the country, he was issued a stateless passport that was valid for all countries except Romania. As he was known and valued in Luxembourg, he was accepted as a new citizen. He then taught at the opera class at the Conservatory for Dramatic Music and Art in Luxembourg. He also taught at the Budapest Opera Studio. From 2002 to 2007 he was artistic director at the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest, where he was also active on the board of directors. At the same house he appeared as a soloist in Mozart's Don Giovanni , Cosi fan tutte , La clemenza di Tito and in Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District by Dmitri Shostakovich . From 2006 to 2013, as opera director, he led an educational opera project for students with opera performances in Bucharest. In autumn 2007 Pantea returned to Romania from Luxembourg. From 2007 to 2010 he was professor at the Master Degree Music Academy in Cluj.

He has worked at numerous music festivals such as La Chaise-Dieu Abbey , Bregenz, Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest, Bucharest, Prague, Echternach, Macao, Açores, Edinburgh, Auckland and others. Pantea gave master classes in Luxembourg, Prague, Cracow, Budapest, Bucharest, Riga, Casa Mateus, Cluj, Oakland, Vancouver, Taipei and other cities. He has recorded numerous sound carriers and videos with Schubert songs, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Wolf, Wagner, Verdi, Dvorak, Prokofiev, Bartok, Enescu, and Hager works.

Honors

Pantea is an honorary citizen of Bucharest, holder of the Order of Merit from Luxembourg and Romania. He received the Doctor Honoris Causa from the Universities of Cluj and Timisoara (2006).
