The Irbe is a river in northwestern Latvia .
The river arises from the confluence of the Rinda and Stende and flows in a flat area with little current. The Irbe flows into the Riga Bay near the village of Jaunciems . The river bed at the mouth runs in a two kilometer long sand bed and changes its position from year to year.
The area is quite remote and was not open to the public in Soviet times due to military installations. Near the estuary is the Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center .
The river was of particular importance to the Livs who lived here .
Irbenstrasse
The name Irbenstraße , the strait between Kurland and Saaremaa , is derived from the river.
