The Irish Church Act 1869 was an act of the United Kingdom Parliament. With him, the Anglican Church of Ireland was separated from the Church of England . The law came into force on January 1, 1871.

history

With the Act of Union 1800 between Great Britain and Ireland, the two state churches were temporarily unified. As an indirect consequence of the Catholic emancipation in the United Kingdom, the Irish Church Act 1869 removed the Church of Ireland from the budget of the Church of England, which happened against the bitter resistance of conservative circles in both houses of Parliament ( antidisestablishmentarianism ). The Church of Ireland lost its status as a state church . The previous financing of the church through the submission of tithes , which affected all citizens of Ireland, was also abolished ; For example, Catholics and members of free churches previously had to pay tithing to the Anglican Church of Ireland. The Church of Ireland did not send any more members to the House of Lords from 1871 .
